“They conquer who believe they can. He has not yet learned the first lesson of life who has not every day surmounted a fear.”

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ok, so I’m guessing you are considering dealing with an old problem or healing a trauma or making positive changes in your life; or maybe you’re hoping to access support for a younger member of your family! Whichever it is, well done for deciding to address it, and thank you for checking in with me. I’m looking forward to discussing how I can help you.

The truth is, most of us are not suffering from mental ill health per se, but rather, mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion from carrying an ever-expanding rucksack of debilitating painful life experiences that weigh us down, often preventing us from reaching our true potential.

Our work together will involve unpacking that rucksack, by exploring, identifying, and removing the hidden destructive effects that have robbed you of your peace of mind and confidence.

People’s emotions and behaviours are influenced by their perception of events, it is not the situation itself that determines what people feel, but how they construe it.- Judith Beck

How do I choose a therapist?

Ask questions, and take your time.

Deciding on a therapist is a daunting process with questions about cost, style, time frames, location, and compatibility. All valid concerns when contemplating sharing personal areas of your life with a stranger, and probably for the first time.

How has therapy changed ?

Therapy has changed over the years.

The medical model of treating mental health is concerning, primarily because few GP practices have dedicated mental health practitioners, and the 10-minute time slots are totally inadequate to address complex needs, which often results in a prescription for anti-depressants, while you are placed on a waiting list for “talking therapies”.

Does therapy always work ?

Some therapies can retraumatise us!

Worrying research has evidenced that some therapies can indeed retraumatise us if it doesn’t identify and clear the root cause of our distress. Whilst some therapies provide temporary distractions, there is the likelihood of relapse…if indeed you can get an appointment this side of whenever!

Depression and Anxiety ?

With an experienced therapist, and methods to cope, you will gain new perspectives.

Sociological changes and challenges in life have resulted in depression and anxiety accounting for more misery in Western societies than physical illnesses, inducing a situation called Psychoneuroimmunology. This is the interaction between the nervous system, and immune system, where the mind and body play a dual role affecting the immune system from which much of what causes disquiet in our life is often rooted in unresolved past events, even from childhood and often without our conscious awareness.

Survival Instincts

Survival instincts are essential but can add to our suffering.

Our survival instinct allows us to disassociate from painful events in the moment, enabling us to get on with our day. But the impact of some experiences in life can create implicit memories which spring out at inopportune moments, unconsciously triggered by anything tenuously connected with the original event such as a smell, song, location, or an innocent comment that now feels like criticism. And so, we learn to irrationally dislike ourselves or others, or places and situations…or indeed life!

Unwanted behaviour patterns?

When unwanted behaviour patterns negatively affect our life.

It is an indication that there are deeper issues that need rooting out to enable us to be more present in our life, and to enjoy life. These patterns might present as anger, or self-sabotage such as procrastination, or worse, alcohol abuse.

Can you help young people ?

Young people are our future.

But they are in crisis now too, with a disturbing 53 percent rise in emergency referrals to youth mental healthcare services in the last three years, with some young people waiting over 52 weeks for an assessment, and little indication of treatment commencement times.

Welcome to the London Therapy Practice

Hi, I am Elaine Chambers..

I’m married, but have also experienced divorce. I have two daughters and three grandchildren, and like all seasoned therapists I’ve had my own share of challenges to overcome. I’ve also been lucky enough to travel extensively over the years which has been educational.

My forty years vocational journey is varied but centred around helping with people to overcome disruptive difficulties in their life preventing them from or achieving their goals, or just being content. After working with young offenders, I qualified as a Probation Officer via Social Work training and later managed a women’s domestic abuse counselling and support service, where I also trained counsellors and front-line staff in the statutory and voluntary sector in domestic abuse awareness.

I’ve worked with homeless charities and spent some time mentoring University students and was co-director of a small mental health CIC. Over the last twenty years I have developed my private psychotherapy practice, specialising in trauma therapy.

As a trauma specialist my approach is solution focussed. I’m not prescriptive regarding the number of appointments required, and I will teach you how to use the simple techniques we will use in your sessions, including relaxing self-hypnosis and Tapping.

So, the next step is to call me for a brief chat and an appointment. I don’t operate lengthy waiting lists, so I look forward to meeting with you seeing you very soon and working on your road to recovery.

Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives”. - William James

I am qualified in various modalities, but my preferred combination is :-

  • EFT

  • Hypnotherapy

  • Inner Child Work

  • TimeLine Therapy

These techniques provide a no-nonsense approach which, over the years I've found to be a highly effective combination.

EFT- Emotional Freedom Technique /TFT - Thought Field Therapy, or Tapping: is a simple method of working with the body’s natural energy system to help alleviate anxiety, trauma, stress, sleep problems, physical pain, unwanted habits, and more. It’s like acupuncture without needles.

Hypnotherapy: Hypnosis allows the brain to enter a state of heightened attention and reduced peripheral awareness, bypassing the critical conscious mind, enabling us to be more open to suggestion and beneficial changes by releasing neurohormones, such as endorphins and dopamine, contributing to its potential therapeutic effects.

Inner Child Work: Is a powerful method of accessing the child you once were, and how early negative experiences and emotions may have been repressed or adversely affected. By contacting and listening to that child, we find the root of early experiences that induced negativity and then reframe them with a positive outlook.

Timeline Therapy: Utilizes our internal timeline of life to work with our unconscious mind in a variety of ways; including, healing emotional traumas, removing unwanted thoughts, and emotions and behaviours that arise from past disturbing events.

EMDR- Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming: is a psychotherapy that aids recovery from past negative experiences affecting mental health and wellbeing. EMDR helps to process negative emotions, beliefs, and body sensations associated with traumatic memories that became stuck and contributed to a range of emotional or mental health problems.

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)/ Personal Development Programmes (PDP): is a psychological approach to how we use language and explores strategies used by successful individuals then applying them to our own life to achieve personal goals, which may have been hindered by early limiting beliefs.

Parts Work Therapy: is a simple but effective approach designed to help us to deal with the different (and often obstructive) stuck parts of ourselves created during chronic trauma, to bring a sense of peace to our life.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol abuse, eating disorders.

Approach and Qualifications

With my background and qualifications I strive to get to each clients root problems as quickly as possible and using various techniques that are most effective.

Success is only achieved when we both know you have lasting results.

Many therapists are trained in one or two techniques and shoehorn a clients symptoms to fit the therapy. I treat every clients problems and then apply the techniques that are effective. This is different for every individual.

I also want to train, and therefore empower you to take charge of your own destiny.
